I finally made it to Adam Curry’s show…

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Adam Curry played my audio comment I phoned in on Friday after listening to DSC show number 677 where he interviews Ron Paul. My comment is played within the first 10 minutes of show 678.

SOW I note that John C. Dvorak and AC now have their own show called No Agenda. Take the Red pill.

Lost remote

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Some how the kids have managed to misplace the remote to my Philips DVP5960 DVD Player. So I set off in search of a replacement in the usual place Google. That’s when I found this hack. I do that Philips made two models of the 5960: a region one (mine) and also a all region unit. Since they are both the same electronics it occurred to me that mine was probably all region as well. I don’t have a region 2 DVD to test it with and I still don’t have a remote to enter the hack! But there are several UK DVD series only available as region 2 so I will have to put this to the test (once I find a remote).

Still juggling three devices

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Concerning my ongoing evaluation of the Nokia N810 vs. the N800 I took a spreadsheet a friend created and added some more comparisons for the current internet devices out there such as the Nokia N770, Apple iPhone and iTouch devices.

I have to say after looking at it for the most part I could probably be quite happy with a 770 or 800. The GPS is nice for me but I guess not that much nicer. I have also come to an epiphany: right now at this point in time the devices commonly referred to as “PDA” and “Internet appliance” do not cross boundary’s for the most part so for now I have settled on carrying three devices: PDA, Phone and Internet device. Until they invent Spock’s Tricorder device this will have to do. Now I am actually considering reducing the PDA (always Palm for me) with the phone (usually Blackberry for me). Hmm… the new Palm, Centro *might* do it for me. More on this later.

Time to ditch Adobe(tm) Acrobat(tm) Writer

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

So there is this dire vulnerability in Adobe Acrobat PDF writer for Windows XP (albeit Microsoft now admits it’s is actually an XP bug) and sure enough an exploit is now in the wild. Sure there is a work around and both Adobe and Microsoft promise fixes at the end of this month. By the way I find it more than a little odd that both companies are fighting over responsibility for this until I considered that Microsoft’s Silverlight product is in direct competition with Adobe’s acquired Flash technology. But fooey on all that I decided this morning. I stupidly paid a bunch of money for Acrobat 6 way back when because it was actually a good and useful product but today I de-installed the printer driver because I found something better.. and of course it’s GNU! It’s called PDFCreator and can be downloaded here from Source Forge. I tried PDFCreator and it works great from Firefox. Unlike Adobe the printer driver remembers the last directory I saved to (I have a master directory where I save my receipts). Here are some screen shots of it in action (click on the thumbnail and then click on Close to return).

Found some new Linux podcasts

Friday, October 19th, 2007

Always on the hunt for new podcasts to take with me on my looong commutes I discovered several relatively new ones:

Upstate Carolina Linux User Group

Lotta Linux Links

I found a giant list here but most of these I already knew about.
